What is the Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act?
The Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act was adopted into law in 2023 and banned what can be considered the most concerning chemicals used in cosmetic and personal care products such as PFAS, phthalates, formaldehyde, and formaldehyde releasing agents. This bill will start the conversation to address Environmental justice concerns.
Safer Products for Washington signal rising regulatory pressure for US
In a recent article published by Cosmetics Design, Editor Cassandra Stern explores rising regulatory pressure in the US beauty care industry. The article notes the addition of several high hazard chemicals flagged by Washington state's Department of Ecology for being "high hazard chemicals". These include cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes in cosmetics and BTEX substances in nail products.
Cheri Peele, director of government and market policy at Toxic-Free Future, told CosmeticsDesign that "manufactures can reduce both regulatory and reputational risk by proactively understanding the chemicals in their products and switching to safer regulations."
Safer alternatives already in use
